(referred to in this notice as “we”, “us”, “our” and “Hearst”), including through the Inner Circle member websites or other online services linking to this Privacy Notice (each a “Site”), and when you participate in our product testing, surveys, questionnaires, polls, forums and other research projects (each a “Project”), we and third parties obtain certain information about you. What Information We Obtain

A. INTRODUCTION
This Privacy Notice describes how the Hearst Magazines Inner Circle (the “Inner Circle”) operated by Hearst Magazine Media, Inc. (referred to in this notice as “we”, “us”, “our” and “Hearst”) collect and process personal information about you, how we use and protect this information, and your rights in relation to this information. This Privacy Notice applies when you sign up to be a community member of the Inner Circle, including through the Inner Circle websites or other online services linking to this Privacy Notice (each a “Site”), or when you participate in our product testing, surveys, questionnaires, polls, forums and other research projects (each a “Project”).

Hearst operates the Inner Circle to better understand consumers’ interests, preferences and behavior and to inform and enhance our editorial content, advertising and marketing initiatives and user experience. We also use the information and input obtained through the Inner Circle and/or Projects to create research and other insights for our business partners and others who may ask us to test their products, services or other offerings. Participation in the Inner Circle and Projects is voluntary.

This Privacy Notice describes the privacy practices of Hearst in relation to the Hearst Magazines Inner Circle, the Site and Projects only and does not cover the practices of other companies. For information about our privacy practices in relation to the Hearst publication websites, mobile apps and other digital services (the “Hearst Digital Services”), as well as in relation to any subscriptions you may have to Hearst publications, please see the Privacy Notice at www.hearst.com/newsroom/us-magazines-privacy-notice. B. WHAT INFORMATION WE OBTAIN
When you sign up to be a community member of the Inner Circle or create a profile, we obtain various types of information related to you. This includes information that directly identifies you such as your name or contact information as well as information such as online identifiers and cookie data, which may indirectly identify you. The information we obtain generally consists of information (1) you give us about yourself during the sign-up process, (2) information we obtain based on your participation in a Project, (3) automatically collected about your interactions with the Site and Inner Circle, and (4) we get from other sources as described further below.

1. Information you give us when you sign up for the Inner Circle
To join the Inner Circle, you are required to create an account and provide us with certain information. You will not be able to register as a community member if you do not provide the requested information. The information you give us includes your contact information (e.g., name, mailing address, email address or phone number), demographic information and your interests and preferences information.

2. Information we obtain in connection with your participation in Projects
To participate in certain Projects, you may be asked to provide us with additional information about you, including demographic, interests and household information (e.g., to be eligible to participate in a Project related to hair care products, we ask you answer questions about your hair color, texture, style and hair care routine). This information may include the following:
  • Demographic, interests and household information. This may include any information relevant to the Project (e.g., if you are product testing anti-aging creams, we will ask for your age, gender and skincare routine. If we are doing a survey about daily routines, we may ask you to provide information such as the number of children in your household, your marital status and your work).
  • Comments, photos, videos and other content or information you choose to share with or submit to us.
  • Your answers and other information you provide in relation to surveys (including information about your participation in activities that generate loyalty or rewards points) or research questions.
  • Location information, including precise location information when you choose to authorize it in relation to your participation in a Project. To prevent the collection of precise location information, please refer to instructions provided by your mobile service provider or device manufacturer.
  • Transactional and activity information (e.g., requests or searches).
In relation to product testing or other Inner Circle initiative, we may ask you to complete a consent form or release. This provides further detail on the specific information we obtain in relation to product testing or other relevant initiatives.

3. Information automatically collected
The Site automatically logs certain information about your participation, including your visits to site, the number and frequency of users, technical information about browsers and devices used to access the Site and/or Inner Circle, and information about crashes or other technical issues. In addition, in accordance with your expressed preferences, we and third parties automatically collect certain information through automated means about your activities over time across the Site as well as across third-party sites, apps or other media. The tools that collect this information vary depending on the Project you participate in and include technologies such as cookies, web beacons, tags, scripts, pixels, local shared objects (including HTML5 cookies) and software development kits (“SDKs”) (referred to collectively as “Cookies and Similar Technologies”).

The information automatically collected may include the following:
  • Information about your computer, device, browser and operating system (e.g., type, model, or version).
  • Internet protocol (IP) address, which can be used to derive your general geographic area (e.g., city and country).
  • Device identifiers (e.g., mobile advertising IDs).
  • Information about your participation in the Site and Projects, including clickstream data that reflect the content you have accessed, clicked on, or viewed. This information varies depending on the Project you participate in.
  • Information about how you accessed the Site, including details about websites or apps visited immediately before or after accessing the Site.
  • Demographic, interests and household information.
  • Information about your interactions with email messages and other communications, such as whether you opened or forwarded the email or clicked on links contained in the email.
Some Cookies and Similar Technologies assign or collect unique cookie IDs or other identifiers associated with your browser or device. Cookies and Similar Technologies may collect information while you are using the Site and certain Projects if they require online or mobile participation. 4. Information we obtain from other sources
We may receive information about you from other sources and it may be combined with other information we have about you. For example, we may obtain information from our affiliates and subsidiaries, from business partners and from third-party data providers.

C. HOW WE USE INFORMATION WE OBTAIN
We use your information:

1. To administer your participation in the Inner Circle and to make the Site and the Projects available to you. This includes:
  • Processing your requests and administering your participation in the Inner Circle and the Projects.
  • Maintaining, operating, improving and developing the Site and related digital services, including developing new features.
  • Enhancing the quality and your overall experience with the Site, related digital services and the Projects, including by retaining your user preferences or presenting content in the most effective manner for the browser or device you use to access the Site.
  • Measuring and optimizing usage, reliability and performance, analyzing trends, and supporting our operations (e.g., for accounting, auditing, financial, legal or other purposes).
2. To create research and other insights.
  • We use the information you provide in connection with the Projects and other Inner Circle initiatives and aggregate it to create research and other insights. We use these insights to inform and enhance our editorial content and to learn about consumers and analyze how you and others interact with and respond to Hearst’s and our business partners’ offerings, and advertising and marketing campaigns.
  • We may use the information you provide in connection with your participation in certain Projects or other Inner Circle initiatives, including feedback, responses and comments, in Inner Circle materials or Hearst brand publications or other content. Typically we attribute this using your first name and city.
3. To communicate with you. This includes:
  • Sending you informational messages about the Inner Circle, the Site and the Projects (e.g., to confirm your participation in a Project or notify you of changes to the Site).
  • Responding to your questions or addressing your requests.
  • Communicating with you about other Projects which may be of interest to you as well as surveys, sweepstakes, competitions, promotions or events.
4.  For advertising and marketing purposes. Depending on the Project or other Inner Circle initiative this may include:
  • Developing, managing and conducting advertising and marketing campaigns, promotions and offers, including about Hearst’s content, products and services or third-parties’ content, products, services and other initiatives. 
  • Interest-based advertising. We and third parties may collect information about your online activities to provide you with advertising tailored to your interests. You may see certain ads on other websites because we or third parties participate in advertising networks. Ad networks track your online activities over time and across different browsers and devices you may use by collecting information through automated means, including through the use of Cookies and Similar Technologies. The information ad networks may collect includes information about your visits to websites that participate in the relevant advertising networks, such as the pages, advertisements or videos you view and the actions you take on the websites. This data collection may take place both on our website and on third-party websites or apps that participate in ad networks. This process allows us and third parties to deliver more tailored advertising and helps us track the effectiveness of our marketing efforts. For more information about your rights in relation to interest-based advertising, including your choice to opt out, see the section Interest-Based Ads Opt-Outs. We adhere to the Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising developed by the Digital Advertising Alliance.
  • Cross-device linking. If you access the Site from multiple browsers or devices, we, our service providers and third parties may try to establish connections among and link the different browsers and devices you use to access the  Site and/or Inner Circle. This helps us provide you with a seamless experience across the browsers and devices you use and serve you with more relevant content.
  • Analyzing and measuring the performance, effectiveness and reach of Hearst’s or third parties’ advertising and marketing initiatives.
5. To protect our rights or the rights of others. This includes:
  • Detecting, preventing and responding to fraud or potentially illegal activities, misuse of the Site, intellectual property infringement or other violations of law, this Privacy Notice, our Terms of Use or other Hearst policies.
  • Performing audits, assessments and testing or troubleshooting activities.
  • Backing up our systems (including for disaster recovery purposes) and enhancing the overall security of the Site or Inner Circle.
  • Complying with and enforcing applicable industry and legal requirements (including legal process such as court orders, warrants or subpoenas) and fulfilling contractual obligations.

D. HOW WE SHARE INFORMATION
We share the personal data we obtain with:

1. Affiliates and Subsidiaries. We work closely with affiliates and subsidiaries within the Hearst family of companies, including Hearst magazine brands, with whom we share your information as necessary or appropriate to operate the Site, Inner Circle and the Projects. We also share research and other insights developed for editorial and other purposes. Depending on the Project or other Inner Circle initiative, we may also share the information you provide in connection with your participation in Inner Circle and Projects, including feedback, responses and comments with our affiliates and subsidiaries. Typically we attribute this type of information using your first name and city.

2. Service Providers. In connection with the operation and provision of the Site, Inner Circle and the Projects we engage various third parties to provide services or handle transactions on our behalf, such as website hosting, email distribution, postal mailing for products you are testing, cloud computing, analytics, ad serving, and managing sweepstakes, competitions, promotions or events. These service providers use the information we provide to them as necessary or appropriate for the performance of their services.

3. Advertisers, Advertising- and Marketing-Related Service Providers and Partners. Depending on the Project or other Inner Circle initiative, we may provide your information to sponsors, advertisers, advertising agencies, ad networks, ad exchanges, marketing businesses, technology vendors and other entities that create, deliver and assess advertising or marketing campaigns, including interest-based ads.

4. Business Partners. In certain circumstances we provide your information to business partners including, without limitation, partners whose products we offer for testing or request information about in surveys. For example, we may share your contact information with our business partners so they can send you offers about their products and services. The participation of a business partner in a particular initiative is communicated to you by the inclusion of the products, services or branding of the relevant business partner.

5. Other Parties When Required by Law or As Necessary to Protect Our Rights. We share your information as we believe is necessary or appropriate to protect, enforce, or defend our legal rights, the privacy or safety of our employees, panelists or other individuals and entities, or to comply with or enforce applicable industry standards, law or legal process, including responding to court orders, warrants, subpoenas and other requests from public and government authorities.

6. Corporate Transactions. We may transfer any of the information we have about you to proceed with the consideration, negotiation, or completion of a sale or transfer of all or a portion of our business or assets to a third party, such as in the event of a merger, acquisition or other disposition, or in connection with a bankruptcy reorganization, dissolution, or liquidation.

7. With Your Consent or Otherwise at Your Direction. In addition, we share your information with third parties when you consent to or request such sharing. Please note that we may share research and other insights based on aggregated information derived from your participation in the Inner Circle with any of the parties listed above. 

E. YOUR CHOICES, INCLUDING MARKETING AND INTEREST-BASED ADS OPT-OUTS
Direct Marketing Opt-Outs
  • Email marketing. You may opt out of receiving marketing or promotional emails from us by clicking on the “unsubscribe” link contained in such emails. Please keep in mind that if you opt out of receiving marketing or promotional emails, we may still send you transactional emails or other communications relating to your participation in the Inner Circle and Projects (e.g., to confirm your participation in a Project or to inform you of changes to the Inner Circle).
     
  • Direct mail. You may request that we stop sending you postal mail offers through the US post office by notifying us in writing at Office of General Counsel, Attn: Privacy, 300 West 57th Street, New York, NY 10019. Please indicate in your correspondence that your request applies to the Inner Circle.
     
  • Marketing by Third Parties. We may provide your contact information to third parties for their own marketing purposes. To request that third parties do not use your postal mailing contact information for their own marketing purposes (if we have your postal address), you may notify us in writing at Office of General Counsel, Attn: Privacy, 300 West 57th Street, New York, NY 10019. Please indicate in your correspondence that your request applies to the Inner Circle.
     
  • Co-Branded, Co-Sponsored or Cross-Promotional Offerings. If you choose to participate in a co-branded, co-sponsored or cross-promotional offering, the brand, sponsor or other third party involved in that offering may use your information for its own purposes, including advertising and marketing purposes. You must contact the relevant third party directly to exercise your opt out choices with respect to such party’s use of your information. 
Interest-Based Ads Opt-Outs
To learn more about your rights in relation to interest-based advertising on your browser, including your choice to opt out, you can follow the instructions provided by the Digital Advertising Alliance (“DAA”) at http://www.aboutads.info and/or the Network Advertising Initiative (“NAI”) at http://optout.networkadvertising.org to place an opt-out cookie on your browser. These opt-out cookies enable you to block participating companies from installing future cookies on your computer or browser. 

F. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS
Under California law, specific disclosures are required and California residents have additional rights regarding their personal information. Please review this section to learn more.

Your California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (“CCPA”) Rights
Residents of California may have the following rights:
  1. Right to access your personal information.  You may request to access the categories and specific pieces of personal information that we collected about you through our Site (Inner Circle) and/or Projects.  
     
  2. Right to deletion.  Subject to certain exceptions, you may ask us to delete the personal information we collected about you through our Site (Inner Circle) and/or Projects.  
     
  3. Right to disclosure.  You may request to receive additional details about the sources from which we collect information, the reasons we collect and share information, and the types of third parties with which we share the personal information we collected about you through our Site (Inner Circle) and/or Projects. 
     
  4. Right to opt out of sales.  Under the CCPA, certain types of sharing of personal information may constitute a “sale” of your personal information.  Depending on the Project in which you choose to participate, you may be asked to share your personal information with a Project sponsor or other business partner. If you choose to do so, then you direct Hearst to share your information with the Project sponsor or other business partner.  This type of sharing does not constitute a “sale” of your personal information by Hearst.
     
  5. Right to be free from discrimination.  You may exercise any of the above rights without fear of being denied goods or services.  
If you would like to exercise these rights with respect to the personal information we collected about you through our Site (Inner Circle) and/or Projects, please use the Access/Deletion forms provided on the Site, under ACCESS YOUR DATA .  If you are a Hearst Magazines subscriber and/or engage with the Hearst publication websites and would right to exercise your CCPA rights with respect to your information collected as a result of your subscription or other interactions with our Magazines publications, please use the Hearst Magazines CCPA portal to submit your request.

Your Shine the Light California Rights (CA Civil Code § 1798.83) Residents of California may request a list of third parties to which certain personal information (as defined by applicable California law) obtained through the Site and Projects was disclosed by Hearst during the preceding year for those third parties’ direct marketing purposes.  If you are a California resident and want such a list, please contact us at Office of General Counsel, Attn: Privacy, 300 West 57th Street, New York, NY 10019.  For such requests, you must put the statement “Your California Privacy Rights” in the body of your request, as well as your name, street address, city, state, and zip code.  In your request, you need to attest to the fact that you are a California resident and provide a current California address for our response.  Please indicate in your correspondence that your request applies to the Good Housekeeping Institute.  Please note that we will not accept requests via the telephone, email, or by facsimile, and we are not responsible for notices that are not labeled or sent properly, or that do not have complete information.

G. DO NOT TRACK
Hearst does not currently take steps to respond to browsers “Do Not Track” signals as no uniform standard to respond to such signals has been developed at this time.

H. HOW WE PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION
We use a variety of security technologies and procedures to help protect information from unauthorized access, use or disclosure.  However, no method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage, is 100% secure.  Therefore, while we make reasonable efforts to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

I. NON-U.S. VISITORS
We operate the Site and Inner Circle from the United States. The Site, Inner Circleand the Projects are directed to U.S. consumers. Any information we obtain about you in connection with your membership of and Inner Circle or participation in Projects may be processed and stored in the United States or other countries.

J. CHILDREN’S PRIVACY RIGHTS
The Inner Circle are intended for use by children under the age of 13 and does not knowingly obtain information from children under the age of 13.
